Definition

Caesarean section, also known as C-section, or caesarean delivery, is the use of surgery to deliver babies. A caesarean section is often necessary when a vaginal delivery would put the baby or mother at risk.

Going home after a C-section

  • After surgery, you should have effective cough so that, hold your abdomen to protect the incision site and breathe slowly and then cough, do this activity several times in a day.
  • If you have pain try to distract with speaking or taking deep breath, relax to decrease your pain. If it does not, inform nurses for injection sedative regarding to doctor tell.
  • Move your feet regularly to prevent make blood clot in veins.
  • After removing your catheter serum, first drink then put in sitting position and after that hang your feet for 10 to 12 minutes, get out of bed if you don't have any headache
  • Be sure that moving in bed do not harm your suture
  • It' needed to move more for remove gasses in terms of constipation and gas accumulation. if it's not effective inform the nurse.
  • Do not use laxative drugs without notice
  • It's not recommended to use bloating foods like milk, cherry compote in the first days.

Caring should be done at home

  • You may have bleeding from your vagina for up to 6 weeks. It will slowly become less red, then pink, and then will have more of a yellow or white color. Bleeding and discharge after delivery is called lochia.
  • At first, your cut (incision) will be raised slightly and pinker than the rest of your skin. It will likely appear somewhat puffy.
  • Any pain should decrease after 2 or 3 days, but your cut will remain tender for up to few weeks or more. Most women need pain medicine for the first few days to 2 weeks. Ask your provider what is safe to take while breastfeeding.
  • C-section patient should be checked up for first few weeks in first level (check up the patient, control and removing stitches
  • change the dressing over your cut once a day, or sooner if it gets dirty or wet.
  • Your provider will tell you when to stop keeping your wound covered.
  • Keep the wound area clean by washing it with mild soap and water. You don't need to scrub it. Often, just letting the water run over your wound in the shower is enough.
  • After allowing your doctor and usually after your discharge you can take a shower, take a shower in standing position and not be very long.

Activity

  • Getting up and walking around once you are home will help you heal faster and can help prevent blood clots. You should be able to do most of your regular activities in 4 to 8 weeks.
  • Do not lift anything heavier than your baby for the first 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Short walks are an excellent way to increase strength and stamina. Light housework is OK. Slowly increase how much you do.
  • Avoid heavy housecleaning, jogging, most exercises, and any activities that make you breathe hard or strain your muscles. Do not do sit-ups.

Warning signs

Call your provider if you have vaginal bleeding that:

  • Is still very heavy after more than 4 days
  • Involves the passing of large clots

As well, call your provider if you have:

  • Swelling in one of your leg (it will be red and warmer that the other leg)
  • Pain in your calf
  • Swelling, warmth, redness, or drainage from your incision site
  • Your incision breaks open
  • Fever more than 37.8°C (100°F)
  • Discharge from your vagina that becomes heavier or develops a foul odor
  • Become very sad, depressed, or withdrawn, are having feeling of harming yourself or your baby
  • Blurred vision, headache, dizziness and suddenly gain weight are other risk factors
